Beat those Credit Crunch Blues: Luxury Holidays on a Budget

With all the talk of the credit crunch and doom and gloom around the world, you might think a luxury holiday is the last thing you should be booking. Ironically, there isn’t a better time to get away and there are some real bargains to be had to places you might have never dreamed of visiting.

You may have to travel a bit further than usual to make you stretch those pennies and pounds, but it will be more than worth it.

One of the first destinations to consider is Sri Lanka. A beautiful, tropical island in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka has thick jungles, picture perfect beaches and historical cities. The climate is tropical (hot and humid) most of the year with monsoon season falling between October and January. It is a good time to visit Sri Lanka as you will be helping to support the local businesses that have lost a lot due to the recent unrest, but you can also pick up a nice deal while you are at it. The British Pound is continuing to rise against the Sri Lankan Rupee, so a lot of travel companies are able to pass savings onto the consumer and hotels need to fill rooms. Flight times are long, but not excessive (around 10 to 11 hours), and there are real savings to be made by booking all inclusive breaks and keeping your holiday dates flexible.

One of the most popular luxury holiday destinations in the world is Thailand. This Southeast Asian gem is a holiday favourite for British travellers because it has so much to offer. The good news for travellers is that the British Pound is starting to recover against the Thai Baht, which means your stay will be considerably cheaper. Tourism is an important part of the Thai economy and has taken a hit due to recent political unrest. This means travel agents have been able to negotiate some fantastic deals on resorts and flights. If you are after a luxury holiday to wash away your daily stresses then Thailand has so much to offer both families and couples with some of the world’s top spas and resorts.

Like Thailand, Malaysia has something for most travellers – beautiful sandy beaches, incredibly vibrant cities and natural wonders that will take your breath away. It’s maybe not the first place on every holidaymaker’s list because of the 13 hour flight time from London, but if you are looking for a budget luxury holiday it’s hard to find a better destination. The British Pound is getting stronger against the Malaysian Ringgit, which means cheaper flights and hotels and also the cost of living when you are away. Choose to stay in five star luxury amongst the skyscrapers of Kula Lumpur, a lavish hut on the white sandy beaches of Langkawi or amongst the Orang-utans of Borneo in a rainforest eco-lodge.

Far away from the tropical surroundings of Southern Asia, Egypt – a popular African holiday destination – has really come into its own during the credit crunch. There’s so much going for this destination at the moment, including reasonable flight times of around five hours, a strong British Pound against the Egyptian Pound, lush sandy beaches and some of the world’s most interesting historical monuments. Egypt is a very hot and sunny country with up to 12 hours of sunshine a day in the summer. Egypt also has some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling in the world with incredible visibility and an abundance of fish, coral and marine life.

Unlike Egypt, which has often been an affordable destination for sunny holidays, the Maldives has always been thought of as an exclusive group of islands for the rich and famous. It is still a high-end luxury holiday destination, but the economic crisis has made it much more affordable and should be on your radar if you are looking for a luxury getaway. There are some real savings to be made at the moment, especially during the low tourist season. It may be a bit rainier from May to October, but it is generally hot all year round with average min and max temperatures around 25oC and 30oC respectively.

Whether you chose to holiday on the white sandy beaches of Malaysia or spend a week snorkelling in the Mediterranean off Egypt, affordable luxury holidays are available in a growing number of destinations around the world. With so many enticing destinations to choose from, the only problem is deciding between them all.

Luxury Yachts And Millionaires

Yachting is a luxury activity. Super yachts can measure up to 90 meters long. They are a symbol of wealth, sophistication, power, and adventure.

Monaco is the centre of the yachting world, where sandy beaches and clear water meet jutting rock cliffs. Each year Monaco is the home to an annual yacht show.

What is the Monaco Yacht Show?

Monaco’s annual luxury yacht show is a four-day event that is celebrating its seventeenth year. It is held at Port Hercules, and has an average of 24,000 visitors each year. The Monaco Yacht Show attracts people from around the world, with over 80% of visitors coming from overseas and 38 nations having representation at the event.

Shipbuilders, boat designers, and equipment suppliers are available at the Quayside Exhibition in an air-conditioned tent. This year’s event will be bigger than ever with an addition of four 2-story pavilions for added exhibitor space.

The Floating Exhibit is what draws people to the Monaco Yacht Show, however. Super yachts are lined up for display, creating a spectacular nighttime display when they are lighted. The largest and newest yachts draw the most attention. Each yacht is worth tens of millions of dollars and is 213 feet or more in length. They have four decks above water, plus a sleeping cabin below.

Social Aspect of the Monaco Yacht Show

The wealth and class doesn’t stop at the yachts. The Monaco Yacht Show opens with a red carpet reception, and the social events continue on from there. From food and dining to drinks and nightlife, the event is full of opportunities to socialize with captains, crews, yacht owners, salespeople, and designers. Should there ever be a dull moment, you can wonder off to enjoy a breath-taking view or relax on the beach.

Getting to the Yacht Show

There are numerous ways to get to the Monaco Yacht Show, depending on your location and your budget.

* Train If you choose to travel by train, your destination will be the Monaco-Monte Carlo Railway Station.

* Car If you drive in to Monaco from Nice, you will take the A8 Motorway and go north at exit 54.

* Plane You can travel from virtually anywhere in the world by plane to Nice Cote d’Azur International Airport. A bus shuttle departs from the airport hourly and will take you to the yacht show.

* Helicopter If you choose to fly in by helicopter you can catch a ride at Heli Air, which is a 6-minute ride and leave Nice every 20 minutes.

There is no wrong way to get to the Monaco Yacht Show, but you will soon discover that the best way to travel is by yacht.

In an age when the private jet is becoming everyday and the limousine is a glorified taxi, it is only when you own a yacht that you are inarguably one of the super-rich said Simon Hills of The Times (June 30, 2007).

Certainly part of the fun is being able to outdo your neighbour and show off the longest yachts with the most amenities. If you are in the market for a super-yacht, there is no better place in the world to be than the Monaco Yacht Show.

YourMonaco.com is a guide for Monaco and Monte Carlo, and for visitors to the Monaco Yacht Show includes details of the hotels in Monte Carlo and Monaco hotels including the world famous Hotel de Paris Monaco

The guide also includes the weather in Monte Carlo, a map and the blackjack and poker at the Monte Carlo casino

Give Yourself The Luxury Of Houseboat Living

Through cultures and through history, people have chosen to live in water. Well, not underwater but just on the surface. This is done primarily by living on houses on top of the water. Some houses are fixed structures near the beach. However what is more fascinating are the floating houses or houseboats that serve also as means of travel apart from a means of shelter. Such houseboats provide people with the luxury of traveling while still being at home. Nowadays, as more people preferred to live on land, some still want the luxury of being able to stay on water, thus houseboating as a pastime was born, and becoming more popular among vacation goers.

Houseboats All Over the World

Houseboats are basically boats that have been designed to be fit for people to live in. Houseboats in the past were usually moored, and were not motorized. Such houseboats that were used as permanent homes were more common in Southeast Asia. But nowadays, most houseboats for luxury have motors for flexibility in traveling by boating enthusiasts.

There are also houseboats in India, usually found on Dal Lake in the vicinity of Srinagar in Kashmir and Jammu or on Kerala’s backwaters. These indigenous houseboats were slow and used for trading spice and rice to the Kochi port from Kuttanad. Nowadays most of them are used for luxury trips as part of tourism in the area. Kerala houseboats typically are 60 to 70 feet long and around 15 feet wide at the center part. The body of the boat is made of wooden planks fastened by coconut fiber ropes. The roof is usually made of palm leaves on top of bamboo shafts. Cashew and nut oils are used to protect the houseboat’s exteriors.

European houseboats are more built for luxury than as a residence. Along Amsterdan’s long canals, one could see very expensive and fabulous models of luxury houseboats. There are even houseboat hotels in the Netherlands. Such houseboats are usually moored, and the decreasing availability of moorings have made such houseboats even more expensive. It is estimated that there are 2,400 famlies living in houseboats along the waters of the city of Amsterdam and the size of their houseboats vary according to family size and affluence.

In Great Britain, there are narrowboats along canals that are both used as permanent homes and luxury holiday accomodations for hire. These boats were originally meant for transporting fuel and raw materials along the canals during the Industrial revolution. Nowadays, the canals are being used mainly for recreational and leisure purposes and as tourist attractions. The narrow houseboats in turn have been transformed to accommodate visitors. Other houseboats can be foundin the United Kingdom, particularly in the coastal regions and they are also used as vacation shacks.

Way down under in Australia, there are also luxury houseboats, particulaly along the Murray River. There, a lot of motorized houseboats based on pontoons are present. Some have two or even more bedrooms, others even have several storeys or levels. There are houseboats that have private owners used either as permanent homes or as vacation houses. Several houseboats in Austrialia are available for rent and could accommmodate from four to as much as a dozen persons.

Houseboats are just beginning to become popular in the United States. The use of houseboats can be traced back to the 40s when some people needed a means of being able to stay on the water surface for long terms. Many houseboat enthusiasts consider Kentucky’s Lake Cumberland to be the birthplace of American houseboating. Nowadays, there are houseboats that could span more than 2000 square feet, of luxury living space. There are also many houseboats in Portage Bay and Lake Union in the city of Seattle in Washington. A lot of American houseboats are built and designed for use in waterways and inland lakes, but there are some that can be used along the coastal areas. Most American experience houseboating through vacations.

Houseboats can be fun to live in especially if they are built for luxury. They offer exciting ways of living on water. Houseboats are getting more popular than ever and could probably become one of the standard elements of vacations in the future.
