Renewing Vows On The Beach…what Do We Have To Do?
In February, my husband and I plan to go on vacation to my in-laws beach front condo. While we are there, we plan on renewing our vows on the beach. (Long story short, the past two years have been nothing but one big trial after another, so we plan on renewing our vows.) What is required in order to have this “ceremony” on the beach? Do we have to have some kind of permit or special permission? It will just be the two of us, and an officiant. There will be no guests there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (By the way, this will be happening in South Carolina)

Hi. NO, you would not need any permit. Most beaches are public anyway, so anyone can use it. If you are right in front of the condo….the condo may actually “own” that stretch of beach from the condo down to approx. 1/2 way to the ocean (if this makes sense.) I know my aunt’s condo in Florida is like that.
So….it may either be a private beach or a public one, but in any case you don’t need
a permit. Especially for 3 people!
Also, since a renewal of vows is not a “legal” ceremony, it could be just the two of you saying what’s in your heart to each other and you can forgo the officiant totally. But, if you want an officiant, that is fine also!
Good luck and have fun!

While you shouldn’t need anything for the actual renewing of vows, if you plan to have a big event, you may need an event permit from the city.
If it’s just you and your hubby, I wouldn’t worry about it… but if you plan to have more than a few people, call the city and check about event licensing.

I’m sure I’ll be corrected if wrong but……
Renewing is between you & your spouse (not so much a legal/license issue) so it would be a matter of finding a minister and asking him if he’d perform (naturally you slip him some $) the “ceremony” & having whatever celebration you want afterwards.
Hope that helped.

I think all you have to do is find a private minister to come out to the area you have chosen to renew and have him re-preform the vows.

Since renewing your vows is more ceremonial than legal, it doesn’t require a license or permit, like your actual marriage did. Just grab an officiant and you’re good to go!
