Follow your dreams dude! You need license to tend out here and the schoolin’ is a must, but it will be hard sloggin’, I’ve tried. If you don’t mind living in a studio apartment for a few years and maybe doing odd jobs on the side then you’ll do fine. also, try it to apply beyond just the nightclub scene, there’s alot of military/veteran/sports pub bars out here in this town. Best of Luck!

Why Long Beach and not Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco? Have you been to Long Beach? Like the other person said, the cost of living in California is still high.
I live in Long Beach and most of our bars are dive bars. Since we have Cal State Long Beach and Long Beach City College you will be in competition with the college students and the numerous unemployeed in trying to get a job bartending. The economy sucks in LB and our unemployment rate is higher than the state and national average.

Aim higher. Cost of living is astronomical there. You’d have to have good experience and mad skills to support yourself in any decent way. Bartending school, IMHO, is a waste of money. You’re going to have to work your way up anyway- might as well save the $ and learn as you go. Get as much education as you can while you can. Save bartending as a last resort.
